Add in taking several medications a day, at different times, and the holidays can get extra stressful.

Here are 5 basic tips to keep you in control of of your medications while you travel:

  1. Do not leave it for the last minute! Plan ahead so you have time to check with your doctor if you have to renew your prescriptions and if you plan to travel abroad, translate the prescription names to the local language of where you’re traveling.
  2. Check the medication regulations: Depending on where you’re going, there are different rules about medications that you can legally bring into a country. For example, in the countries of the European Union you are allowed to enter with common medicines or those that are by prescription, as long as you have a copy of the script. In the United States, you must take the medicines in their original packaging and for some countries in the Middle East you must contact the consulates to verify that your medicines are not prohibited in those nations as they are very strict with certain medications, considering them “illegal drugs. «
  3. Some medications for diabetes, cholesterol or high blood pressure need refrigeration, so check the airline’s rules regarding special containers and packages.
  4. Keep your medications in your carry-on luggage: it’s best to have easy access to your meds at all times. Feel free to inform the security agents that you are carrying these medications, especially if you carry refrigerated or injectable medicines.
